THE HOMES WE CARRY | DOCUMENTARY | BY BRENDA AKELE JORDE
THE HOMES WE CARRY portraits a family torn apart by the turmoil of world history between Germany, Mozambique and South Africa. At the center is Sarah, an Afro-German mother, who wants her little daughter to have the relationships she lacked as a child. Therefore she travels with her to Africa, where her own father and the child's father are waiting for her. Meanwhile, Sarah's father Eulidio remembers the almost forgotten history of the Mozambican contract workers in East Germany.

CINEUROPA:
The Homes We Carry is an impressive documentary with a timely and relatable topic, and its back story is excellently researched and presented.
THE FILM VERDICT:
A bittersweet, heartfelt debut feature from director Brenda Akele Jorde, The Homes We Carry explores a little-known chapter in Cold War geopolitical history.
BUSINESS DOC EUROPE:
I would say that at the heart of this documentary is Sarah’s smile, which appears again and again in this easy-going, unhurried documentary. It demonstrates her self-assurance, her poise and her enjoyment of life. Showing her child that, as an Afro-German, “I am both and I can do both.”
