Unlike Mexican cartels or the Italian mafia, Chinese triads operate in secret. Drug smuggling, online fraud, and human trafficking—their criminal activities are diverse and their reach extends as far as Germany. Jenke von Wilmsdorff delves into the shadowy world of the triads. He meets members of the gangs and talks to victims of their crimes who have been imprisoned and forced into online fraud or prostitution. He tries to find out how the Chinese government is involved in these activities and travels to the “Golden Triangle”: a special economic zone in the border triangle between Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar, which is considered the center of many of the triads' activities and where opium cultivation and smuggling flourish.
